SMTP Authentication
Document ID: 1637HQ
ISSUE:
My service provider has increased security to reduce SPAM and now I need
to enter a username and password when sending mail. Does Eudora support
this?
SOLUTION: Eudora 4.3 supports SMTP Authentication. We support the CRAM-MD5,
PLAIN, and LOGIN encryption methods for SMTP Authentication. It is turned
on by default in Eudora.
To toggle the setting, go to Tools: Options: Getting Started: and toggle
the setting "Allow Authentication". You can also do this for your personalities
under Tools: Personalities.
Ici encore une instruction du site IMAIL:
Watch out for version 4.2.0 which claims to support SMTP AUTH in help
files, but in fact it does not as far as we could tell. Anyway 4.2.2 supports
it and we recommend you to use it.
To enable SMTP AUTH you will have to edit the "eudora.ini" text file which
is located in Eudora's directory.
First quit Eudora, then open "eudora.ini" in your favorite text editor.
(In most Windows systems, simply double click on the file name and Notepad
will open the file for editing.
At the beginning of the file, you will see something like this:
[Settings]
SMTPServer=mail.mailops.com
SMTPPort=25
AsyncDatabase=0
AsyncWinsock=0
NC=1
Code=NC
POPAccount=joe@mailops.com
RealName=Joe
Blow
ReturnAddress=joe@mailops.com
DomainQualifier=
PopServer=mail.mailops.com
etc...
To activate SMTP AUTH add 2 following lines, just below the [Settings]
line:
SMTPAuthRequired=1
SMTPAuthAllowed=1
Now start Eudora and everything should work fine. Eudora works best when
you have the same password on the SMTP server as on the pop server because
it's hard to distinguish between SMTP and POP3 password dialogs. Also
you should have THE SAME login on both (SMTP and POP3) servers. This is
the correct configuration for Mail Options.
NOTE: If you still have problems, find the line that reads "CRAM-MD5"
and replace "CRAM-MD5" with one of the following: "AUTH", "PLAIN", "LOGIN"
Sorry, its trial and error at this point until something works....
